March of the Atlantians - Hidden Viking History

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Legend has it that the Atlantians were our Viking ancestors. The artifacts plus the Atlantis Narrative and writings of ancient Egypt tell us that is true history.

The Atlantians (our ancestors) migrated all through Europe and Asia Minor. They were stopped at the borders of Egypt, time frame 1500-1300 B.C. They occupied all of Greece except Athens, who stopped them.

Solon, the famous Athenian, who studied in Ancient Egypt was the one who took the story back to Greece. He heard it from the Egyptian priests. The story of the Atlantian (Viking) invasions. He did so because he was proud that his Athenians had the courage to be the only ones who stopped the invasions.

The reason why these invasions were dismissed as 'unhistorical fairy tales,' is because the leading, modern archaeologists placed Atlantis in the wrong location and in the wrong time frame. But the stories of the account of the invasion which the Egyptian priests told Solon is true history. Their statements correspond exactly with the events of 1200 B.C.

The march of Atlantean ancestors is know as the 'Great Migration.' The Egyptian records tell how Athens checked this invasion of the North Sea Peoples.

Atlantis does not take it's name from the Atlantic Ocean, but from Atlas, who was the god who stood in the North under the Pole Star, on the Amber River Eridannus.

Archaeological research has shown that the thickly populated area of North Europe lost most of it's population during the thirteenth century B.C. The natural catastrophe of the Comet Phaeton was a cause of the migration as well as the sinking of Atlantis.

Many of the trade routes which have been set up by the North Sea Peoples (Atlantians) now became escape routes. The natural catastrophies in the Nordic area could no longer support the population. The migration was from the North to the South.

The German archaeologist H. Hoffman, came to these conclusions, without knowledge of the ancient Egyptian Medinet Habu text. This text suppoorts precisly the finds of the archeology material. The homeland of the North Sea Peoples was destroyed by natural catastrophes.

"...Their Souls were in utter despair and the need of their mouths (hunger) drove them."

A rich supply of archaeological evidence traces their routes to the South. They used the old Amber Trade Routes. Along these routes, Urufields (cremated dead) and grave mounds of the North Sea Peoples were found. The "Germanic Flange- hilted sword" was the favorite weapon of the the North Sea peoples and found everywhere.

The North Sea Peoples took three different routes on their way to Egypt. The first went up the Elbe and Oder Rivers, to the Danube. They drove out the Illyrians who lived there, who in turn moved to the Alps.

In the second half of the thirteenth century B.C., the North Sea Peoples reached the Hungarian Plain. The inhabitants fortified their settlements, but were driven out regardless. They retreated to the rim of the Carpathians.

The invaders from the North, brought a new culture to Hungary. It was called the "Urnfield Culture." The conquerors of the North built grave mounds for their chief men, and Urnfields for the commoners.

The 'Burial Mounds and Urnfield ' archaeological finds in Hungary are not native to Hungary. They were brought there by the North Sea Peoples, our ancestors. They settled Hungary for some time.

They select five children a day to participate in this activity. Register your children at the Atlantis Kids Club for a chance for one of the spots. This activity is done Tuesday thru Saturday at 2:30 pm. There are two rules, the kids must have water shoes and be able to get into the lagoon without the aid of a parent.

Then there is the beach tower which is more moderately priced. The rooms, all 423 of them, are decorated in a tropical decor. Here you can choose from king or two double beds with Terrace or water views.

Parapsychology Schools Teach Parapsychic Sciences

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Those who are fascinated by the parapsychic sciences should look into parapsychology schools. The word parapsychology is derived from the Latin word "para" (which means beyond) and psychology; it literally means "beyond psychology." Schools for parapsychology offer instruction in the areas of clairvoyance, psychokinesis, hypnosis, extra sensory perception (ESP), telepathy, and more.

Parapsychology schools allow students to explore a scientific domain that cannot be explained by known laws of physics or biology. A number of schools offer degrees in psychology, anthropology, or other fields allowing for a concentration on parapsychology, often under the guidance of a practicing parapsychologist. There are various levels of education in parapsychology, and students can earn various credentials from schools for parapsychology, such as the Parapsychology Certificate, Diploma of Parapsychology, Bachelor degree in Holistic Studies, or a Bachelor of Science in Parapsychological Studies, just to name a few.

The typical college-level curriculum found in parapsychology schools might include classes such as ethical and legal issues in holistic care, regression therapy, angels, astrology, spiritual development, sound therapy, near death experiences, chakra therapy, spiritual healing, divination, theology, astral projection, vibrational healing, psychic healing, channeling, and even business management! In short, parapsychology courses are diverse and designed to prepare graduates for a lifetime occupation in the parapsychic and paranormal fields.

If the idea of Parapsychology Schools sounds like a path you might be interested in pursuing, take a moment to submit a request to schools found on our website. You could soon be enjoying a whole new career!

A Skilled Builder And A Furniture Store

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Building in Second Life is a skill, talent, and artwork all rolled into one. Everything in Second Life is art some is better art then others and then some art stands above the rest and so it is with Exquisite Furnishings and the furniture sold there.

The owner of the store is Papo Lungu and in Real Life he is a skilled carpenter and his eye for building is absolutely fabulous and I am not exaggerating one bit. The two key things all builders need in Second Life to have wonderful builds are textures and a building area that allows for high prims to be laid out without lagging so badly that you cannot build.

Mr. Lungu has an inventory of textures that are so lovely, distinctive, and unique, that until I met him, I had no idea such rich textures existed. Amazingly enough the textures that he has in his inventory I have not found in the "big" textures stores in Second Life.

After seeing his initial build of a bedroom set for one of his beautiful submissive's, I encouraged him to begin building his own stuff and offering it for purchase in Second Life. Elven Enchantment has given him space in the ozone layers above the Museum to put out his building box and it is from here that the magic is worked.

The first build in the building box he created was a rich, chocolate, knotted wood with velvet tan in-between the knots complimenting the darker wood. A fireplace with gold edging and a gold medallion was set over the mantle of the fireplace. Chairs for a gentlemen and his lady were designed to sit in front of the fireplace and a table in-between the chairs and it was all set on a luxurious rug. A matching bed was designed for the chairs and fireplace so that you can enjoy your bedroom either rolling around on the bed or sitting in the chairs talking with your sweetie and the matching gold bands were placed on the outside of the footboard and around the headboard. The covers for the bed are a rich green matching the green on the chairs in front of the fireplace.

The fireplace was the last item built for this set and when I logged into Second Life and came by to see Mr. Lungu's build, I did not see the fireplace right away. I was using voice and jabbering as I tend to do, and suddenly my "camera" point came into focus with the fireplace and my breath was ripped from my lungs, and I was suddenly speechless. This fireplace was the most magnificent piece of furniture that I had ever seen in Second Life.

It immediately made me want to run out and buy a wood cabin and rent more property just so I could buy that fireplace and stick it into my cabin in the mountains. Of course, owning as much property as I do in Second Life, made that desperate wish impossible at this time, but boy I was amazed at the stunning beauty of the fireplace.

Mr. Lungu decided that this set would be his signature series and the medallion over the fireplace his logo for his business. He proceeded to put his initials in the middle of the medallion, making it three dimensional.

He then rented a spot in the Retail Zone of Horizons WEST and placed his signature series and a sleigh bed and related furniture into his store.

Unable to resist the opportunity to sell complimenting artwork at his store, I gained permission to display some of the artwork from the Museum's February exhibition of Eden Cale's digital paintings. It is exciting to watch the development of this new and unique furniture store in Second Life.

Lower Parel Flies High

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Following the footsteps of Nariman Point and Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Lower Parel is coming up well as the Extended Business District (EBD) at Mumbai's commercial real estate scenario. From decaying chawls and jam-packed lanes to high-rise office buildings, housing some of world's biggest corporate houses, the area has undergone a massive change.

Lower Parel is advantageously located at the inroads to South Mumbai's CBD, BKC and the Secondary Business Districts (SBD) such as Malad, Andheri, Thane and Navi Mumbai. It also has domestic and international airports in close proximity.

Due to the huge tracts of land available, development in Lower Parel is significantly taking place in a planned way. Of late, Lower Parel has witnessed entry of big enterprises in the compounds of the departed mills. State-of-the-art office buildings such as Phoenix Towers and Marathon Heights laid down the standard for more superior and premium commercial projects like Raheja Atlantis and Marathon NextGen.

When Morgan Stanley struck a deal in the swank Peninsula Corporate Park for Rs 410 a sq ft, i.e. Rs 50 lakh per month for 12,000 sq ft, the industry took the notice of prospects in Lower Parel.

The rental values, across Lower Parel, Nariman Point and BKC, have been soaring since past few years. Rentals are between Rs 250 and 350 per sq ft in Nariman Point and between Rs 250 and 275 per sq ft in. BKC, for now, commands between Rs 300 and 315 per sq ft. As per industry reports, the office space supply during early 2008 is going to be sturdy with approximately 2.2 million sq ft of space getting available which is going to stabilize the prices.

The two huge developments coming up in the vicinity of the Lower Parel area includes projects by prominent real estate developer DLF and Indiabulls. Service Apartments are being developed and luxurious residential buildings are also coming up and redevelopment of several buildings is on track as well.

With this, Lower Parel is expected to boast of an exclusively new skyline. According to the real estate industry experts, the success of any new commercial or residential property project depends mainly on location. Considering that, Lower Parel is ideally placed to become the new commercial real estate hub of Mumbai.

Bermuda Triangle Facts - or Fiction?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the few Bermuda Triangle Facts that can be confirmed is the Bermuda Triangle location. In fact, the location of the Bermuda Triangle is somewhat arbitrary as well. There are no official boundaries. However, the triangle is generally assumed to run from Bermuda to Puerto Rico to Miami and back to Bermuda.

A fact that is unexplained about the Bermuda Triangle is that electro-magnetic compasses that normally point to the magnetic north pole, point to the true north pole when used inside the area of the Bermuda Triangle. This phenomena happens in only one place other than the Bermuda Triangle – the Devil’s Sea off the east coast of Asia.

The term Bermuda Triangle was in fact first used in an Argosy Magazine article written by Vincent H. Gaddis in 1964. Since that time, a number of “nicknames” have immerged for the Bermuda Triangle – Limbo of the Lost, Hoodoo Sea, and even Devil’s Triangle – some coined in literature.

One fact is undeniable about the Bermuda Triangle. There have been a number of strange and sometimes unexplained disappearances in the Triangle. The tale of Flight 19 – a group of five Navy torpedo bombers and one search plane disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle area (perhaps!) – is the most notorious of these.

However, there have been strange occurrences observed in the area of the Bermuda Triangle as well. Even as far back as the 1492 crossing of the Atlantic by Christopher Columbus, these have been recorded. Columbus documented in his logs of strange occurrences with his compass in the area that we now consider the Bermuda Triangle.

Another fact about the Bermuda Triangle that is undeniable is that the area has claimed over 1,000 lives in the past 100 years. Some of these are a result of “human error” in navigating the area. However there are always suspicious or unexplained disappearances happening in the Bermuda Triangle.

There is a vast array of lore surrounding the existence of the Bermuda Triangle. Some of this stems from the idea that with-in the Bermuda Triangle lies the lost city of Atlantis in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Off the coast of Bimini, there is a set of underwater steps believed to be part of that civilization. Little exploration can be done because the Bermuda Triangle includes some of the deepest trenches in the Atlantic Ocean – much too deep to explore.

Today, thousands of passages are made through the Bermuda Triangle every year. Virtually every Caribbean cruise originating from the east coast of North America passes through part of the Bermuda Triangle. Modern planes fly to the Caribbean hotspots and from southern United States to Europe through the Bermuda Triangle. Perhaps the next time you travel through the Bermuda Triangle by air or sea you will think of the lost civilization of Atlantis and her mighty power?

The Stargate Universe

Image : http://www.flickr.com

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...." was a tagline that brought the concept of SciFi into the mainstream and opened up our world and our imaginations. In the three decades following the launch of the Star Wars franchise, we have seen many incarnations of Science Fiction series come and many more go. Series like Star Trek, Babylon 5, FireFly, Battlestar Galactica, Andromeda, Earth: Final Conflict and a slew of others. However, there exists one unique franchise which has remained a prevalent player in the SciFi space despite the demise of much of their competition.

The Stargate Universe as an entity has existed since 1994 and has since grown into a global dynasty encompassing a Movie, 2 television series, comics, books, audio books, games, toys and an assortment of FanFiction.

The Stargate Universe all began with the initial film, written by Dean Devlin and directed by Roland Emmerich. The film turned out to be a mega hit with worldwide sales of $196,600,000 and a $55,000,000 cost of production. The film was initially intended to be part of a multi-film franchise however, due to scheduling issues and differences in creative visions between Devlin/Emmerich and MGM, the initial vision was never carried out. It was in fact this disagreement that led to the studio execs evaluating other ways to capitalize on the success of the film.

The executives decided a television series would allow for long-lasting opportunities and with that Stargate SG-1 debuted on July 27, 1997 on the Showtime premium cable network. After seeing impressive ratings on Showtime, the studio wanted wider distribution and moved the series to the SciFi network where it immediately became a cult classic. The series led by Richard Dean Anderson of MacGyver fame lasted for a total of ten seasons and on average cost MGM $1,400,000 to shoot. By its final season, the show surpassed the ratings of big hits like X-Files and attaining the title of the longest running consecutive sci-fi series on television. After an incredible ten year run, Stargate SG-1 was discontinued in August of 200, but the franchise lived on as Stargate Atlantis.

Stargate Atlantis was created in 2004 as a two part season finale for season 8 entitled "Lost City". The plot involves a group of military forces and civilian scientists that travel to the Pegasus galaxy in search of the Lost City of Atlantis. In its current incarnation, the series has seen great success and has proven over the years to draw the same level of followers as SG-1.

The future of the Stargate Universe is scheduled to include two direct-to-DVD films being released later this year entitled "Stargate: The Ark of Truth" and "Stargate: Continuum". In addition, there was a 2006 Comic-con announcement by Stargate creator Dean Devlin that he is currently in talks with MGM to produce the final two films in the trilogy and leverage the talents of James Spader and Kurt Russel.

The series today stands out as a remarkable example of creativity and vision of a better future. The series is one that will live on in multiple incarnations moving forward as ling as it retains the excellent writing staff and an uncanny ability to explore current social and political issues in a unique way.

Rules for Christian Living

Image : http://www.flickr.com

"... Holding on to faith and a good conscience" (1 Timothy 1:19); "Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me" (Philippians 3:12).

William Booth (1829-1912) left an established church to become an evangelist to the poor. He eventually founded the Salvation Army because the churches would not accept his slum converts. Because of his work with the poor and downcast, General Booth eventually formulated these rules for Christian living:

1) Consider your body as the temple of the Holy Spirit and treat it with reverence and care.

2) Keep your mind active. Stimulate it with thoughts of others that lead to doing something.

3) Take time to be holy with daily Bible reading and prayer.

4) Support the church of your faith.

5) Cultivate the presence of God. He wants to enter your life and will as far as you let him.

6) Take God into the details of your life. You naturally call upon him in trouble and for the bigger things.

7) Pray for this troubled world and the leaders who hold the destinies of the varied nations.

8) Have a thankful spirit for the blessings of God: country, home, friends, and numerous other blessings.

9) Work as if everything depended upon work, and pray as if everything depended upon prayer.

10) Think of death not as something to be dreaded, but as a great and new experience where loved ones are met and ambitions realized.

A daily reading of these rules would improve our life considerably!

What Is The Importance Of History?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When we study about what has happened in the past, we always look at important figures, important events, important groups, ideas, and movements. History is so broad that it can include everything from what has happened in Latin America, China and Europe. Learning about history is important because some of it should be common knowledge. By knowing a bit about what has happened in our world, you can help see why things are the way they are as of know, what will happen in the future, how great minds work, how evil people work and much more. It doesn’t hurt to know too much about history.

One basic importance of history is to know enough to do well because your knowledge of it is tested. It can be in the classroom, it can be in the UN, or for a historian meeting. If you do not know enough, than you put yourself at risk of not achieving what you can.

It is also important to know about world history because you can then educate others who do not know as much. They may not need to know much about history in their selected fields of study but without knowing a little is not acceptable. If you do not know about what has happened, you do not truly understand the word. By looking at what has happened, you can understand cause and effect, how important ideas and events played out and more.

When you understand history, you understand basic concepts and ideas. You will learn about cause and effect, relationships and human nature. Since history is mainly about what causes the next event or action, people can clearly understand how things are related to one another. For example, is there is extreme repression of the people in a certain country over many years, there will probably be some people who will take the stand to fight back, possibly forming a revolution. Another example is when the China government copied their ideals from the communist ideas of Marxism because of what they felt about the majority of the people. Reading further on, if you know enough about history, you can see how people’s attitudes and feelings are changed as a result of an action. Some of these people may choose to use violent tactics or choose to use non violent measures. You can understand the nature of these kinds of people.

When you also know about history, you can understand what it really means to be in someone else’s shoes. We all live our own separate lives and choose to be affected by what we see around us. We can take action or we can remain passive. When you read about the history of various countries, you can understand the pain, the joy and more that people feel when they do something difficult or amazing. You can understand what it means to have no food, or what is means to be rich and without love. Just like reading a book, history is a big book filled with many real stories. Know you can picture what it is like to live in china during communism or what it means to be an American.

By understanding history, you can understand why things are they way they are right now. Many of the past events and histories in the world have shaped what we are as of now. From the major wars, including the American Revolution only go to show the nationalism and pride of the people of America. If you look at Africa, you can understand why it is not as modern and strong as other countries today. They have been isolated from the world for some time until European colonists came and took over. Countries such as Bolivia are in a horrible situation because of the fact that they were slow to move forward. Globalization affects everyone, but some people are taken advantaged over while other gain much more. If you look at India, you can understand why it freed itself from Britain. Lead by a man who used non-violent actions, they were able to prove that they were being taken advantaged of. You can also understand why countries have conflicts because of territories, because of disputes and more. All of these countries that make up the world today have changed since the beginning of time. The reason for change is evident and helps us understand the current place we are in now.

By understanding what has happened in the past and the current situation of today, we can better understand what can happen in the future. By looking at what has happened, we can understand what we should avoid and what we should make better. We live in a country that is strong today because of what the past leaders have all done. If we avoid problems that we have done, such as the Great Depression, we won’t have to deal with that ever again. If we understand the importance of friendship and rights, we can make them stronger than ever. If we have read about a problem that we say should have been taken cared of a long while ago, then you should help out situations that are happening now. Some of these situations include Darfur and the war in Iraq. History allows us to make the changes needed to make this a better world.

Lastly, history is so important because each of us is part of the history that takes place. We may not know much about what is going around, but each of us is a member of what is going on right now. We can choose to help out situations that matter to us and do avoid ones that we choose not to tackle. Remember, history does not stop at the textbooks, it merely continues until the end of time. Each one of us is a living textbook of what is to come.

Call of Atlantis Game Review

Image : http://www.flickr.com

After the past success of both Atlantis Quest and Rise of Atlantis by Playrix, it is quite obvious that we're going to see a third installment in this hit series. The Call of Atlantis game had just been released to fill this void, and through this review, we'll get to see how this latest game fares well against its predecessors and against its many competitors as well.

The story of the game starts after the creation of Atlantis, a prosperous and peaceful city made from the powers of the god, Poseidon. Many years have passed since Atlantis was created, and with the passage of time, memories of their heritage faded and they soon forgot to worship their creator. Angered by his people, Poseidon then punished them by bringing endless calamities to their lands and sealed his altar which was designed to keep Atlantis safe from strife. Atlantis is doomed to suffer until the chosen one arrives, who will bring the seven crystals back to Poseidon's altar and bring peace to their lands once again.

The gameplay of Call of Atlantis is divided into two parts with one involving a match-3 game and another one which involves hidden object finding. The match-3 part employs traditional tile swapping as you try to rebuild broken artifacts by driving their parts to the bottom of the board. You must collect all of the artifact parts before time runs out, or else, you'll have your life points decreased by one heart each time you fail.

Just like any match-3 game, you can also collect several power-ups to help you out in your quest. Power-ups include bombs, lightning and additional time you can use whenever you find yourself stuck in a pinch. Matching four or more tiles can also activate Poseidon's amulet of power, which can take out multiple random tiles whenever you get a chance to use it. All in all helping you out against the many obstacles set in the game, including chained tiles, frozen tiles and unbreakable blocks that continuously resist your progress.

Stories, Myth, Legends and Weather Vanes

Stories, Myth, Legends and Weathervanes

The compass rose however, the very tower itself has survived, and many artists throughout the later half of the last millennium had the chance to draw the tower in its many stages. As time went on, we have seen not only the evolution of the weathervane, but the many real adventures this temple of the winds has survived

The oldest surviving written poem by the Greek poet Homer known as the Iliad and its sequel, the Odyssey, tell the tale of a man called Odysseus or Ulysses. These poems were the foundation of what made the very religious navigating people of a scattered language; The Greek Civilization. Language, Religion and the poetry of Homer, that is what made a person Greek. Not land, state or city, but art and culture, things of the heart and soul. The stories of myth and legend have always been the fuel of human imagination throughout our history, and art represents that. The Queen Ann's Revenge was a pirate ship that brought terror to the seas of the coastal Americas, the legendary Blackbeard was her captain, and since that time has become one of the most inspiring sculpture piece weathervanes. In Babalonian mythology, a great cockatrice rooster/dragon gives birth to the world and the very first artistic representation of a Dragon. Later, in many Norse mythologies and English Royal banners, the dragon went on to become an important figure in weathervanes, and still is today.

The Enchantment of a Wind

The wind is an enchanting aspect of our earth and our lives upon it. The wind enchanted the poets, artists and even scientists such as Andronicus in the days of Antiquity, and continued to enthrall and inspire artists throughout Rome, Europe, Scandinavia and across the Atlantic ocean to the Americas. Sailors' lives have revolved around the behavior of the winds for so long. And it has always been the sailor who has taken reverence of the wind from one country to another. The great Horologion of Athens may have been built to tell the time either at night or day, but as a temple, it was dedicated to the gods of the wind. And that enchantment of the wind sailed across the waters of trade routes the world over with the Anglo-Saxon metal workers who saw in the weathervane a metal "fane", a metal flag. This is the English origin of the word weathervane, a "weather flag."

Human Imagination in a Weathervane

Stories, myth, legend, culture, art, religion; human imagination in a weathervane. We as humans give so much importance to works of art, that art itself can influence our imaginations and our beliefs. The joy that comes from a home owner when someone asks, "Why do you have a ship on your roof?" The story that comes with that answer is a powerful thing indeed. The tales of Blackbeard and the Queen Anne's Revenge would make for a wonderful afternoon story, over a pint of milk and some cookies. Or perhaps a mermaid that swims in the wind. What a tale it would make to tell of the sunken city of Atlantis to children at night in front of the fireplace with homemade bread and hot chocolate.

Dana Weyer is a former sailor and ocean going sea captain who sailed the seven seas in his earlier years. His journeys took him and many of the vessels he commanded to the trading capitals of Europe, Asia and the Far East. His ventures were quite often in search of unique and artistic creation found in other parts of the world. With his past ventures and journeys in mind he retired to the farms fields and rolling hills of Wisconsin to establish a new trading venture offering handcrafted weathervanes to the America public.

Donald Trump and His Entertainment Empire

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Donald Trump has made his way into people's lives. Let it be by real estate, businesses, among others, or, most commonly, entertainments. Miss Universe, one of the most important beauty pageants in the world, and which everyone talks about year round, recently crowned the new beauty of the Universe this month of August at the Atlantis Hotel, located in the Bahamas.

The annual contest, which is run by the Miss Universe Organization, started in 1952, when it was founded by Pacific Mills. After over half a century and being owned by others, Donald Trump acquired it in 1996, and has been the owner since then.

On January 2004, the first episode of what would become a popular TV program all over the world was seen by many. The Apprentice, hosted by Donald Trump, became a dream for many, and the best entertainment for others.

The reality show was a job interview that would last several weeks. The contestants were divided in two groups, each assigned a business-related task to compete every week, where one person from the group is assigned project manager. This person becomes responsible for the team's management and performance during the task. The winner team is rewarded with amazing prizes. The loosing team is condemned to face Mr. Trump and two advisors to discuss their performance. At the end of the evening, one person from the loosing team is fired. Donald Trump hires the winner for a period of one year. After all, going through the reality may be worth it at the end. Like these two, Trump also owns entertainments such as skating rinks, restaurants, model management, productions, and others.

Beautiful Day? Take the Kids to One of These Orange County Places

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Orange County California has some wonderful places to take our small fry for some good old-fashioned outdoor fun-it always been that way. When my sister and I were growing up in Los Alamitos, my mom would take us to several beaches and parks on a regular basis. When my kids were growing up, I took them to the same great spots. And now, my grandchildren will get to do the same! Okay, one isn't born yet, and the other is a mere seven months old, but I think you can see that when you have "an oldie, but a goodie"-they're going to keep being around generation after generation!

Now Huntington Central Park in Huntington Beach is free! It has a huge park area, bike and horse trails, lots and lots of acres to run around in and enjoy. Picnic tables are all over and families love to have birthday parties at the first come first serve areas and covered spots. What I always loved is that there is this cute little shack of a restaurant called, very appropriately, "Alice's in the Park". Homemade cinnamon rolls that aren't only huge, but more important, delicious. So are the juicy burgers on homemade buns and anything for breakfast.

Atlantis Play Center in Garden Grove. When my mom took us, we were free but adults were a quarter! Now the fee is $1, but it's a fun water-themed playground. Birthday parties in secluded coves, picnic areas, huge serpent slides, octopi merry-go-rounds and seahorse rockers, and more. I remember feeling very much at ease sitting with my fellow moms and all of us letting our little "fish" run themselves ragged! One of my own birthday parties were held there. Hopefully, my grandson will "yo ho" with the best of the underwater school participants within the next couple of years.

Irvine Park in Irvine. The park is huge-acres and acres that I have yet to discover all of! The most popular things they offer is you have little ones is the pint size railroad and the rides that go with it and the pony rides. Call the city offices before going, since they sometimes have to forgo the weekend fun due to weather.

If the weather is hot or just plain Southern California gorgeous and you'd like to go to the beach-prices have gone up, but I've always enjoyed Newport Dunes RV Resort in Newport Beach. They have a grassy park area, a small market and snack bar, a private pool area that's part of your "entrance" fee and the cleanest most private rest rooms you've ever seen at a beach! Since it's privately owned and operated, there's always enough life guards. No waves, so forget any ideas of surfing, but since we're talking "small fry" that should be a bonus. Very, very family orientated.

The last two are more theme parks for the very young. Built with lots of "horse" play in mind and the most expensive to spend the day at-consider these when a special outing is on the docket:

Adventure City in Anaheim. Lots of rides, even roller-coasters, done in versions not meant to give the younger kid set concussions or nightmares, yet still allow them to feel the "thrill" of a day at an amusement park.

And then Soak City, USA in Buena Park. Now this wasn't around for me and I am not one to enjoy being in wet, dirty clothes, but trust me-just bring an extra set of clean things and let your kids just be, well, kids! My nephew-who also doesn't enjoy being less than pristine, went with his third grade class and was named "Mud King" by his classmates-had a blast and even now at 15-talks about what a great end of the year party that day was!

There you have it-so grab the short ones in your home and get out there and have some good old-fashioned fun!

Collinsonia Root for Varicose Veins

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you or someone you know suffers from varicose veins listen up. I have discovered something that works.

Collinsonia root, otherwise known as stone root, is a not very well known natural remedy. But it is a great remedy, and I personally can attest to its healing properties. I have tried many things to help varicose veins, and I have found only two natural things that work: the raw food diet, and collinsonia root. In this article I will discuss the benefits of collinsonia root, and how it can help your varicose veins.

Collinsonia root is an diuretic, tonic, and vulnerary. A diuretic means it increases the secretion and expulsion of urine. A tonic means it strengthens or invigorates an organ, or the entire organism. A vulnerary is something that is a healing application for wounds, a topical application. This is what most books say collinsonia root does. But somewhere, in a little whole in the wall health food store called “Atlantis Rising”, a place that had a heated brick floor, and the employees were barefoot, and they played tripee music, and had all kinds of cool raw food books, herbs, and incense....they had the biggest herb book I have ever seen in my life. Twice the size of the largest Bible I have ever seen. I was, and am still a little jealous. But it was just sitting there on a table for everyone's use.

In that book, I looked up the cure for varicose veins, this is a true story, and I found collinsonia root. I don't remember the property that they gave it in that book, but I glommed onto it, found a Naturopathic college that sold it that was close by, and began taking it. I took 2 capsules, 3 times a day, and did not change my diet, which was a pretty standard American diet, add a little more veggies and fruit. After six weeks I would wake up itching! My varicose veins had been shrinking, and I believe the itching was a sign of further healing. My husband and I were shocked at the improvement that just this one herb did for my varicose veins. We had tried other things on me, but nothing got these kinds of results.

One word of warning. Don't let anyone sell you the unground root. Buy it already ground, and put it in capsules yourself. The naturopathic college quit carrying the root because, well it's not called stone root for nothing: it broke several of their grinders!

Do a search on collinsonia root to find a supplier. It is a pretty inexpensive cure for varicose veins.

Sir Gawain and the Ghost of the Green Knight ((Part I of II) (A Poetic Epic-Drama))

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Prelude to the Green Knight: “Sir Gawain and the Ghost of the Green Knight,” is a unique tale of romance, tragedy, in the Dark Ages, taking place at Camelot. It is a dramatic Epic poem, done in three styles: narration for explanation, poetic verse for emotions and rhythm, and dramatics for dialogue. It is out of the ordinary, for it involves a sage that starts in Atlantis, and blends into Troy, Rome and onto England. The Green Knight is the main character in this tale, as Florencia and Gawain, become supporting actors, sort of. The quest is not a quest, until the Green Knight meets Florencia at her birthday party, the King, King Arthur is giving for his niece. Gawain, is her protector, and the King’s right hand man. The ending is potent, and will live on within the hearts of those who love such romance and adventures of Medieval Europe.

Impression:

A Tale of the Green Knight

1: We come now to the grand story of the Green Knight

(or at least one of his life long adventures; and origins),

for I sense there were scores of, spirits and flesh

that made the Green Knight what he was,

and I do hope I can tell the tale as it truly was.

Let me say, his fame started shortly after

his name was changed to the Green Knight

—prior to his legendary plight with King Arthur;

hence, then called Bercilak de Hautesert.

In the times of King Arthur, two stories emerged

of the Green Knight, thereafter a third tale emerged

placing him in the Crusades, and becoming respected

by the notorious Saladin the Great,

(Muslim leader of his day), and marrying

a peasant woman from Glastonbury.

2: Much of the Green Knight’s story and glory is in being

a warrior, and from the forth to twelfth centuries

one can see this plainly. And as we look deeper

into his surroundings, he is interwoven with

Celtic Mythology, and maybe with a touch of modern

day Anglo-French: with a background in Arthurian legend,

where it was incorporated with the “Conte del Graal,”

For the Green Knight carried a Danish Axe did he not?

And he was beheaded was he not? And he lived

thereafter, did he not? And his skin, horse and all

his garments were of a ghostly green, were they not?

3: I take it he may have been married between

one to three times, that is, depending on whose tales

one needs to read and wishes to believe,

for they date back prior to the Fourteenth Century, AD

Both King Arthur and the Green Knight are confusing

figures to say the least, perhaps both of British-Roman

origins, so it would seem, so it must be. As well as,

Camelot, the castle of controversial issues; likewise,

the Round Table, which it is said, still exists.

I actually went to Glastonbury and visited

King Arthur’s grave, if indeed it was his grave.

I do believe we must have a lot of faith in these fables,

and there is a tinge of testimony for King Arthur

and the Green Knight’s existence. And so now

we shall go onto the next stage of this story.

The Green Knight

Recounted

The Crusades of Asia

12th Century

4: So you see we have had a figure of a huge

knight, a symbol of bravery also—and of a

ghostly persona. One who lives and dies and lives

again, and seems to reach beyond his original roots,

and comes to life in the fifth century England,

and resurfaces in the 12th century Crusades.

But I have found out it goes much deeper than that.

And he was more than what he says. Let me explain:

he was I do deem, a tester of the Knight’s,

of their times, as Arthurian text would put it,

and perhaps J.R.R. Tolkien, in the case of

Syr. Gawayne, and his translation (1925): and other

translators of the tales of the Green Knight,

such as Jessie L. Western, and W.A. Neilson,

all quite skillful in their versions (1999). And for the most

part these paraphrases are well needed, practical,

in modern English from Middle English, which has

produced a readable medieval past, in fiction.

5: Now we must really touch on the Ghost of the

Green Knight before we get into the really story,

which is, in its end form,

“The Monologue of Florencia.”

I dare say, but I will, if a man can seize his

head in his hands, after decapitation

(as it was done by Sir. Gawain) he is nothing

less than a ghost, and perhaps a little more.

And then, talk to his decapitator. What kind

of man can stand before another and do that,

with green skin to his bones. And so in this

case we eliminate all the possibilities and get

right down to the facts, he is more than he seems,

and for a good reason, and I shall tell you that

story for posterity sake in a moment.

6: Sir Gawain beheaded the Green Knight, by allowing

him to take the first swing with an axe, but in return,

he would have to meet the Green Knight again, and let

him have his turn. Quite a test for a night is it not.

And would Gawain be true to his honor? These of course

were the testing tools of the Green Knight. And is not

a reputation for a Knight above all other

things that were perhaps the main matter in the

back of the Green Knight’s mind.

7: Well, to indulge you a tinge more into this story’s

past, told many times, but not like this…Gawain did

return to the Chapel where the Green Knight was, one

year later (for he had seen him prior to this, with

Florencia), and now bowed his head to be cut off

by none other than the Green Knight. But Gawain

was no fool, he but a special metal strap around

his neck to protect it, yet, he still get a wound,

but he got to walk away with his head and nick

firmly attached, and his honor intact.

Yes indeed, Gawain did a very shrewd thing. On the

other hand, the Green Knight used his wit and

wisdom to test the Knight’s integrity, almost

devilish, almost likened to Satan himself who testing

Christ on a Mountain top. But then the Green Knight,

he believed I suppose, as Mark Twain once said:

“A virtue is not a virtue until tested under fire.”

8: So now I will tell you with all sincerity, I believe

this next story, sketch or call it tale, as much

as I believe all the other tales of the Green Knight:

this one although needs your undivided

attention, and it is not like the others, a

medieval romance, rather it is beyond that.

The Story

From its Original Roots

King of Atlantis 10,666 BC

9: When Atlantis fell (sunk into the Atlantic)) 9600 BC))

about four-hundred years before King Phrygian,

of Atlantis, whom lived in the palace at the

Port of Poseidonia, had printed a journal—

one of treachery with the demonic

Netherworld (Hell, itself). His kingdom was somewhat

fashioned by the underworld you could say, perhaps

that is why God Almighty, destroyed it. At that

time the High Priest, Xandore was killed and possessed

by the infamous figure, friend and foe,

know in Hell, as Agaliarept, the Henchman.

He was a brave beast in his own right, devious

as such are, psychotic as any other demon,

and renowned in the netherworld for his prowess

in weaving Atlantis into its internal chaotic doom

(or moral downfall). One night he slept with the

King’s wife, Ais. Oh, not with his blessings—but

by threat: hence, he crept into his bed, as the

king moved over, and whom he had sedated

her during dinner, thus, she slept soundless

throughout the ordeal, as the Henchman, seduced

her, hour after hour, in a lustful frenzy.

Ais, not knowing much pertaining to what she

had endured, and considered now a nightmare,

only acknowledge, she had raw and aching thighs.

Agaliarept, the Henchman of Hell

10: The Deception

Shortly after the king was murdered in his garden,

so the ancient scrolls have indicate—just how

is uncertain—but the best I can piece it together

is as follows: Phrygian some twenty-years older

than the Queen, Queen Ais still quite young, were having

lunch as often they did in the Garden of Poseidon,

within their palace grounds by the seaport—there,

hidden in the distance was a figure in the garden,

hunched down behind some shrubbery; some have

said it was the High Priest, and I do believe it to be,

for he had the utmost motive, Ais—his lustful dream.

But perhaps it could have been someone else,

nonetheless, the king choked on food, as it was written

down by Anases, the scribe: Anases whom was

present in the palace during those far off days,

and it was his duty to write down everything, whatever

he witnessed, heard, or could verify—to be put

onto scrolls (known as The Codex Scrolls).

11: In any case, what took place was that he either had a

allergic reaction, or got a bone caught in between

his windpipe or whatever, but he could not breathe,

and died—died in a development, fighting for air;

Ais being too afraid to leave his side, lest someone

come and kill him with a dagger or sword—remained.

And the wealth of the realm of course went to Ais.

12: In the underworld, in Hell itself, days are not

normal days as on earth, nor are weeks, months or years.

That is to say, days in Hell, can be months or years,

depending on actions and reactions. Nights are

long, so I’ve heard, and like in Heaven or in

any Army on earth, there is a hierarchy—

in hell, there is a pecking order, I say this because

I do not know the time period in my next paragraph,

but it was not years, rather days, weeks or months,

I tend to think it was perhaps twenty-months,

earth time, a few days or hours, Hell time.

13: Anyhow, in time, Ais was confronted by her dead

husband to join her in Hell, saying in so many

words: if you join me, Beelzebub, the King of

Demons promised me a high position (the forth

in command). Her love and devotion for him

was unconditional, and she followed him to the

innards of Hell, but while in the waters of Hades,

Hell’s river of sorts, he pushed Otis, the row man

over the edge of the vessel and as legend says,

they sailed around the gulf for 1000-years

(before he was caught).

14: Now you might be saying: what does all this have to

do with the Green Knight? A lot, but first we have to

shift back to the sinking of Atlantis. Ais had a child,

a hybrid (a crossbreed), a giant of a soul, one third

man, two thirds superhuman. His skin was pale

and the older he got, greener. Agaliarept, took the

matter of the child birth more serious, he was proud,

almost, and at time he was, boastful, he considered

him his son, and in time to be the leader of the

Archkingdom of Atlantis, Bercilak, escaped the

upheavals of 9600 BC, then what took place was this:

the human residue of Atlantis escaped to its satellite

countries, the isles of England, Crete, and inland,

Egypt and Troy. At this time, the Mound known as the Tor

had already existed for some thirty-thousand years,

next to Glastonbury, England, where King Arthur

would be buried.

The Tor of Avalon I Glastonbury

AD 450

The Agreement and the Ten-winged
Dark Seraph

The Ten-winged Dark Seraph

15: Agaliarept, was called back to Hell’s area,

by the Ten-winged Creature, the Dark Seraph

of doom, whom was superior in authority to Beelzebub;

Agaliarept was reluctant, and so he asked for a pact,

and it was granted; it was that his son be given life…

to the closing stages of living time—accordingly, he

would return to the Great Walls of Hell, without protest.

It was strife and sadness that overtook him. But sealed

in black blood, it was unforgiving should he break the bound.

(And so it was that he becomes ghost and flesh, as one.)

16: Hence, he would join in a long series of wars,

the Green Knight, as he would be know in due time—:

first he fought at Kish, for Gilgamesh; next,

at the great siege of Troy, for Paris, prudently;

with the Greeks, 400 BC, at Athens; and

under the banner of Rome, during the republic,

and for Pompey, until he lost his way, and life; and

even the Inca Kings of Peru, prior to Atahualpa.

It was the fifty century AD, although, when his name

would preced him, as flesh and spirit, in the British Isles.

At this time, King Arthur and his renowned Knights

sparked an interest in his life, especially, Syr Gawayne;

like he, Arthur and Gawayne, were marvels in battle.

Interlude

17: (Narrator)

Now my just reader, you must listen closely, and

I will tell it as it was told to me, and it is fixed truth,

linked to a scroll of a scribe and seer, long before Arthur,

for he saw it all in the dark magical waters in his den

(and then, it came to pass, unwritten until now.)

ARE's Search For the Hall of Records

Image : http://www.flickr.com

According to the Edgar Cayce readings, the people of Atlantis became aware of the fact that their civilization was about to be destroyed. As a result, they hid identical records of the Atlantean civilization in Bimini, in Egypt, and in the Yucatan. Numerous readings contend that this "Hall of Records" will be discovered, including:

(Q) Give in detail what the sealed room contains.

(A) A record of Atlantis from the beginnings of those periods when the Spirit took form or began the encasements in that land, and the developments of the peoples throughout their sojourn, with the record of the first destruction and the changes that took place in the land...This in position lies, as the sun rises from the waters, the line of the shadow (or light) falls between the paws of the Sphinx, that was later set as the sentiel or guard, and which may not be entered from the connecting chambers from the Sphinx's paw (right paw) until the time has been fulfilled when the changes must be active in the sphere of man's experience.

Between, then, the Sphinx and the river. (378-16)

How Were The Pyramid Stones Moved?

Edgar Cayce stated the force used to move the pyramid stones into place would be discovered in 1958. New evidence shows he may have been right.

Many people have speculated about how the ancients were able to move gigantic stones to erect pyramids with such apparent ease. Ideas have ranged from alien technology to telekinetic power to complex systems of levers. On November 12, 1933, Cayce was asked, "By what power or powers were these early pyramids and temples constructed?" (5750-1)

He replied, "By the lifting forces of those gases that are being used gradually in the present civilization, and by the fine work or activities of those versed in that pertaining to the source from which all power comes."

On June 23, 2001, a small group of researchers from Caltech raised a 15-foot, 6,900-pound obelisk into a stable, vertical position in the Mohave Desert in just twenty-five seconds. They used only what was initially described as a "kite," a pulley system, and a wooden support frame. The kite was actually a modified ascending parachute made of nylon. The Black Space Experience

The roots of the black space experience date back some 8,500 years when the first lunar calendar was crafted from a bone. Like ancient peoples elsewhere in the world, Africans (sub-Saharan black peoples) “shared the same inspiration and awe of the stars” and “struggled to make sense of it [through] creativity and intelligence” [1] patiently taking “countless generations to watch, justify and map the heavens”[2] and define their relationship with them. According to Dr. Thebe Medupe, a prominent astronomer at the University of Cape Town and the South African Astronomical Observatory, “[Africans] shaped constellations out of stellar patterns and came up with stories about them, …constructed calendars to organize their lives and even erected stone alignments… to follow the sun’s ‘path’ throughout the year.”[3] It was for this reason that Bernard Harris, Jr., the first black astronaut to walk in space stated, “When we look at history itself, you realize that astronomy – the study of the stars – that whole origin… [was] being done by people from Africa. And now I get to fly amongst those same stars” when emphasizing the importance of knowing and understanding history – “If you don’t know where you are and where you came from, you’ll never know where you are going.”[4]

African societies dating back to the ancient times relied on “the stars to predict the likelihood of rain, so they could prepare the land”[5] for planting, for migration (e.g. the Bozo people of Mali “migrate along the delta of the Niger river when the Pleiades transit overhead and begin their fishing season when the Pleiades leave the night sky”[6]) and navigation as well as for determining points in time, leading to the construction of megalith (large stone) observatories and the development of lunar-based calendars, all of which were critical since for them, “knowledge about the movement of the stars [was] a matter of life and death.”[7]

Accordingly the Moon and the stars had a special place in African societies. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) “the Milky Way is called ‘God’s clock’ [since] it is orientated east-west during the wet season and… north-south during the middle of the dry season.[8] At the same time, in “central Nigeria… a strong correlation [is] observed between the tilt of the points on the crescent moon and rainfall. As points tilt to the right, dramatic increases in rain[fall occur and] as points tilt to the left, dramatic decreases in rainfall [occur].[9]

Two famous African megaliths that made use of astronomy are Nabta, built between 5500 B.C. and 3500 B.C. by Central African nomads in southern Egypt near the modern-day border with Sudan and Namoratunga II, which was erected in 300 B.C. (aligned to the 7 stars of the Borana calendar – Triangulum, Pleiades, Aldebarran, Belletrix, Orion, Saiph, and Sirius)[10] and stands near Kenya’s Lake Turkana. Based on archeological data, Nabta consisting of “stones aligned with the different rising positions of the Sun… (caused by the Earth’s rotation) [used] to determine the seasons”[11] is perhaps the oldest astronomical alignment in the world, 1,000 years older than Stonehenge. At the same time archeological finds indicate that the Mursi of Ethiopia and Kushites and Bambara of Sudan were also influenced by and “interested in horizon and zenith (sunrise and sunset) events”[12] as were the peoples inhabiting Benin, Togo, and Zimbabwe.

In Benin and Togo, “the Batamalimba people designed their houses such that their crossbeams [were] aligned to the equinox sunrise and sunset” while the Karanga people constructed “a chevron pattern bisected by the solstice Sun” in the Great Zimbabwe stone city that was built around A.D. 400 and completed about A.D. 1350 to mark “important astronomical seasonal events.”[13] In addition, the Pyramids of Meroë built in Kush (now part of Sudan) and the more than 1600 stone circles discovered to date in the lands comprising the Gambia, Senegal and Togo are likely further examples of African archaeoastronomy.

In conjunction with the construction of megaliths, African societies ranging from southern Africa to sub-Saharan northern Africa, also developed calendars based on the lunar cycle. The oldest such calendar, the Ishango bone, dating back to 6500 B.C. that “was found at the site of a fishing village on the shores of Lake Edward which borders the [Democratic Republic of] Congo (DRC) and Uganda”[14] and is believed to have been used for predicting tidal phenomena. At the same time, another early lunar calendar based on a series of concentric circles ranging in number from 29 to 30 was found in “certain caves in Tanzania.”[15]

Even today several African peoples use lunar calendars. Examples are the Borana of southern Ethiopia and northwest Kenya, the Mursi of Ethiopia, the Ngas of Nigeria, and the Dogon of Mali, each of whom either adds an extra month consisting of 11 days at the end of the year or a 33-day month at the end of each third year to compensate for the difference that arises from the 365.25 day solar year (period of time it takes the Earth to complete one revolution around the Sun) in which there are 12 lunar cycles (period of time ranging from the first rise of the new moon to the final setting of the full moon) consisting of 29.5 days each. The Ngas use the term “bergu” for each 29.5-day month and “gamwe” to describe the final 11 days that follow the 12th and last “bergu” of each year. In addition, some peoples in South Africa “still use the same word for month and moon”[16] because of their connotative relationship.

Because of their interest in the heavens and their attempt to create intelligible frameworks around them, Africans also developed myths and legends surrounding celestial bodies and constellations. “The Pleiades and Sirius figure largely in the star lore of the peoples of Mali and Ethiopia… The Milky Way… and Venus… are focused on all over Africa, while the Southern Cross is important to the Zulu, Sotho, and Tswana [peoples] of southern Africa and… recognized as a navigation constellation.”[17]

Examples of these African myths and legends are as follows: The Bushmen who inhabit southern Africa “believe the Milky Way was made by a Bushman girl who wished for a little light and threw wood ashes into the sky [creating] different colored stars by throwing different colored burning roots into the air. [There are also two other stories. One involves] two stars of the Southern Cross, Alpha and Gamma Crucis… The creator had two sons called Khanka and Khoma. One day the two boys went hunting with a family of lions, but the treacherous lions ate the boys. In his anger and despair, the creator made fire and hid it in a meteor disguised as an eland’s horn. The creator called down the meteor and it hit [and killed] the lion. [Afterwards the creator’s] heart was calmed and there was fire for everyone. Khanka and Khoma are Alpha Crucis and Gamma Crucis. [The next is about Pleiades and the three stars of the Orion Belt, in which] …seven daughters of the sky god (Pleiades) were married to a hunter. One evening [he] went hunting [for] zebras (the three stars of Orion’s Belt). He was such a bad hunter that his arrow missed, and because he was afraid of the nearby lion (Betelgeuse, another star) he left the arrow where it lay (now known as Orion’s sword). [Afterwards, being] …too embarrassed to [return] home to his wives because he did not have meat to bring to them, …he [stayed] out… in the cold as the star called Aldebaran.”[18]

In addition to merely studying astronomy, developing lunar calendars, and creating myths and legends about the heavens, Africans also exchanged information and ideas with Islamic scientists following the establishment of protected trade routes in the areas encompassing Mali, Mauritania and Senegal. The peak of this exchange occurred during the rule of the Ghana, Mali and Songhay empires (c. A.D. 1200-A.D. 1591) when Islamic traders traveled to African cities in search of gold, the economic standard of their lands after Iranian scholar, Ibn al-Faqih al-Hamadhani wrote in c. A.D. 900:

It is said that beyond the source of the Nile is darkness and beyond the darkness are waters which make the gold grow… to the town of Ghana is a three-months’ journey through deserts. In the country of Ghana gold grows in the sand as carrots do, and is plucked at sunrise.[19]

During the height of this trans-Saharan trade, Islamic scholars established learning centers and introduced the written language, resulting in the creation of thousands of African books pertaining to astronomy and science.

However, it was not until late in the 20th century, some two decades after the United States and the now defunct Soviet Union (USSR) had begun their manned space programs, that descendents of these early African astronomers actually made it into space, much in part due to the efforts of Luke Weathers (b. A.D. 1920), a black World War II veteran with a degree in science and biology and others who had “pressured the U.S. military to train a corps of black pilots at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama… to prove that black Americans… could handle the most challenging… jobs.”[20]

This led to June A.D. 1967 when another pilot, Major Robert H. Lawrence, Jr. (A.D. 1935-A.D. 1967) with over 2,500 flight hours behind him, successfully completed the Air Force’s Flight Test Pilot Training School at Edwards Air Force Base in California and was named the first African-American astronaut. “Though he never made it into space”[21] dying on December 8th when the F-104 Starfighter piloted by a trainee whom he was instructing crashed, Major Lawrence had participated in the Air Force’s Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) Program, a project that “would eventually lead to today’s International Space Station.”[22]

Despite the setback, blacks were not going to be denied their place in space. Following the success of the Civil Rights movement, new opportunities emerged much in part due to improved education and equal opportunity chances. As a result greater numbers of blacks enrolled and were accepted into America’s space program.

History was made on September 18, A.D. 1980 when Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez (b. A.D. 1942), a Cuban of black-hispanic heritage was launched into space as part of the Soyuz 38 crew. “After docking with Salyut 6, Tamayo (a Cuban Air Force pilot) and [his partner Yuri] Romanenko (b. A.D. 1944) conducted experiments in an attempt to find [the cause] of space sickness, and… a cure.”[23] He spent 188 hours and 43 minutes in space before returning to Earth on September 26, A.D. 1980.

This was followed by the August 30, A.D. 1983 launch of Guion “Guy” Bluford (b. A.D. 1942), a U.S. Air Force Colonel who had majored in aerospace engineering and minored in laser physics, aboard the space shuttle Challenger on the STS-8 mission which lasted 145 hours. Upon entering space during the worlds’ first night launch, Guy Bluford became the first African-American astronaut to make the trip.

Afterwards Guy Bluford participated in three additional missions – STS-61-A (October 30-November 6, A.D. 1985 aboard Challenger), STS-39 (April 28-May 6, A.D. 1991 aboard Discovery), and STS-53 (December 2-December 9, A.D. 1992 aboard Discovery). During his career, Col. Bluford who retired from active space duty in 1993, amassed 28 days, 16 hours and 33 minutes in space. Since then Col. Bluford has been inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame (A.D. 1997) and “has spoken before many groups… where he serves as a role model,” all possible because his mother, a teacher, and father, an engineer, had encouraged him and his three brothers to “set their goals high” and because he ignored a school counselor’s advice to”learn a trade, since he was not college material.”[24]

The next black astronaut to make history was Dr. Mae Jemison (b. A.D. 1956), the daughter of a maintenance worker (her father) and teacher (her mother) who earned a BS in Chemical Engineering, a BA in African-American studies, and a doctorate in medicine. Notably, during her years in medical school and participation in the Peace Corps she had provided medical care to persons in Cuba, Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Thailand.

When the space shuttle Endeavor was launched on September 12, A.D. 1992, Dr. Jemison became the first African-American woman in space. Following her 7 day, 22 hour, 30 minute mission aboard Endeavor as a mission specialist (STS-47 September 12-20, A.D. 1992), Jemison retired from space flight to found The Jemison Group “to research, develop and implement advanced technologies suited to the social, political, cultural and economic context of the individual, especially for the developing world.”[25] Yet despite her post NASA pursuits, Dr. Jemison in following the encouragement and support given by her parents, consistently encourages African-Americans to pursue scientific careers especially with the space program – “This is the one time when we can get in on the ground floor.”[26]

A third history making black astronaut was Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr. (b. A.D. 1956), a private pilot and flight surgeon with a doctorate in medical science and a master’s degree in biomedical science who had dreamed “to look down on the clouds” since he was 8. “I was watching what was happening with the space program, watching these guys go up… people called them American heroes. I wanted to be a hero too,” he declared when thinking back to the infancy of the U.S. space program.[27] On February 9, A.D. 1995, Dr. Harris became the first African-American to walk in space when he and astronaut Michael Foale (b. A.D. 1957) “made a five hour space walk to test thermal improvements in space suits and to hoist a 2,800 pound telescope that would aid… efforts to design [the] International Space Station.”[28] Afterwards, he reflected back to 1963, perhaps the most pivotal year in the Civil Rights movement (e.g. the march on Washington, D.C. where Martin Luther King, Jr. made his famous “I have a dream” speech in August, the Birmingham Church bombing a month later that martyred four young black girls, etc.) stating, “Those were some of the best times and worst times. Here on this planet we were fighting for human rights and at the same time we were sending men to the moon.”[29] Appropriately, Dr. Harris dedicated his space walk, which he described as “probably the most wonderful day of my life”[30] to “all African-Americans and to African American achievement.”[31]

During his astronaut career, Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr. took part in two missions – STS-55 (April 26-May 6, A.D. 1993 aboard Columbia as a mission specialist conducting “a variety of research in physical and life sciences”[32]) and STS-63 (February 2-11, A.D. 1995 aboard Discovery as payload commander) logging 18 days, 6 hours and 8 minutes in space. Like Bluford, Dr. Harris also serves as an inspiration encouraging “children of all races to follow his example – ‘Don’t be afraid to dream… Get… an education. Be willing to work hard. If you do these three things, there is nothing that you can’t do in life.’”[33]

In addition to the above-mentioned African-American astronauts, others have also pursued and made the journey to and from space. In the process, two – Ronald E. McNair, Ph.D. and Col. Michael A. Anderson, made the ultimate sacrifice – giving up their lives in quest of scientific exploration and discovery for the benefit of humanity. Summaries of these inspirational astronauts are listed below:

Lt. Col. Michael P. Anderson (A.D. 1959-A.D. 2003) amassed 24 days, 18 hours, and 8 minutes in space, participating in STS-89 (January 22-31, A.D. 1998 aboard Endeavor) and STS-107 (January 16-February 1, A.D. 2003 aboard Columbia). Tragically Lt. Col. Anderson lost his life when the “space shuttle Columbia and her crew perished during entry, 16 minutes before scheduled landing”[34] at Cape Canaveral.

Charles F. Bolden, Jr. (b. A.D. 1946) amassed 28 days, 8 hours, and 37 minutes in space, participating in STS-61-C (January 12-18, 1986 aboard Columbia), STS-31 (April 24-29, A.D. 1990 aboard Discovery), STS-45 (March 24-April 2, A.D. 1992 aboard Atlantis as the first African-American mission commander), and STS-60 (February 3-11, A.D. 1994 aboard Discovery).

Robert L. Curbeam, Jr. (b. A.D. 1962) amassed 24 days, 17 hours, and 49 minutes in space, participating in STS-85 (August 7-19, A.D. 1997 aboard Discovery) and STS-98 (February 7-20, 2001 aboard Atlantis).

Col. Frederick D. Gregory (b. A.D. 1941) amassed 18 days, 23 hours, and 4 minutes in space, participating in STS-51-B (April 29-May 6, A.D. 1985 aboard Challenger), STS-33 (November 22-27, A.D. 1989 aboard Discovery), and STS-44 (November 24-December 1, A.D. 1991 aboard Atlantis).

Ronald E. McNair, Ph.D. (A.D. 1950-A.D. 1986) amassed 7 days, 23 hours, and 15 minutes in space during STS-41-B (February 3-11, A.D. 1984 aboard Challenger). Tragically Dr. McNair perished along with the rest of the Challenger crew when the space shuttle exploded minutes after launch on January 28, A.D. 1986 for the STS-51-L mission.

Stephanie D. Wilson (b. A.D. 1966) who to date has amassed 12 days, 18 hours, and 36 minutes in space (STS-121 – July 4-17, A.D. 2006 aboard Discovery).

Based on the growing roll of African-American astronauts, which likely will include Joan Higginbotham (b. A.D. 1964) who is slated for launch this fall, the efforts of Dr. Beth A. Brown, a pioneering African-American astrophysicist, the creation of a “National Astrophysics and Space Science Programme” in South Africa consisting of a collaboration among the country’s “universities and research institutes [that focuses on] honors and masters students [to create a new generation of space scientists][35], and the A.D. 2005 debut of the 11-meter-wide South African Large Telescope (SALT) at Sutherland, “the Southern Hemisphere’s largest and most advanced telescope”[36] the black space experience can only grow richer as the future remains bright like the Earth’s shining star, the Sun.
